Ziba Sultana Mim: a young dreamer rising against the odds

At just 11 years old, Ziba Sultana Mim, a sixth-grade student from Palash High School in Palash Union at Bishwambharpur Upazila of Sunamganj District, carries dreams far greater than the challenges she faces each day.

Ziba lives with her parents and five siblings, two sisters and three brothers, in a humble family sustained by her father's work as a day labourer. The only asset the family owns is the small piece of land on which their home stands.

With a very limited income, Ziba's father struggles to meet the basic needs of his children, let alone afford educational expenses. Yet Ziba is deeply passionate about her studies, with science her favourite subject. Inspired by the courage of Malala Yousafzai, she dreams of becoming a doctor and serving her community.

There were times when her father couldn't afford even basic school supplies, and the threat of dropping out loomed large.

At this pivotal moment, ERA stepped in through the Education Champion Network (ECN-7) project, funded by the Malala Fund. Hearing about Ziba's situation, the organisation mobilised support from local community members. A respected local figure arranged her school admission along with essential learning materials, and that single gesture inspired other well-off individuals to come forward for more underprivileged students in the area.

Ziba's resilience has sparked hope among many girls in her community, showing them that education is not beyond reach. Her journey has brought pride to her parents and is changing mindsets about what girls from the haor can become.

Today, Ziba continues her education with renewed energy. Her story is a reminder that when a community unites to lift up its children, dreams can flourish anywhere, even where the water rises every year.
